Herbs for Healthy Teeth and Gums

Healthy teeth and gums are a joy forever, so clearing up any problems you have with them should always be done quickly. I have had perfectly healthy gums most of my life, but a while ago a developed gum disease from overcrowding because my orthodontia came late. I would have to have a rather uncomfortable periodontal cleaning. Being a big herbal enthusiast I immediately started web surfing for natural ways to improve my condition and hopefully eliminate the problem. I found several resources for naturally healing gums which I put to use at once. It turned out to be a wise decision, I still had the cleaning, but the periodontist said that my gums were considerably healthier than when he'd first seen them and the herbal treatments helped prevent further damage. I thought it would be good to share them as they should be useful to people with similar problems.

Herb Packs

One method is herb packs made of medical guaze and a combination of tumeric powder, aloe vera, and vitamin E, this recipe might sound a little messy but it works.

1 tsp of tumeric powder

2 capsules of aloe vera(or 1/4 tsp)

2 capsules of vitamin E ( or 1/4 tsp,natural vitamin E is preferable)

puncture capsules or pour aloe and vitamin E into tumeric powder and mix until paste forms. Smear onto gauze and fold gently into a pack, place between teeth and wall of gums. Keep there a few hours or preferably overnight. Be careful, tumeric stains very easily but is very healthy for gums, so you may want to use tooth whitening toothpaste or something after this treatment.

You can also add powdered alum to the mixture, it's highly disinfecting and can work wonders. But be warned it can also irritate the gums as it is a pickling agent.

Mouth Rinses

There are several rinses that are highly beneficial for your mouth.

1 tea tree oil

Dilute the oil in a glass of water and rinse with it like you would mouth wash. Make sure not to swallow it and do not use this treatment for long periods of time.

2 goldenseal rinse

I've heard many good things about this even though I haven't used it.

3 eucalyptus oil

This oil is usually massaged into the gums.

Any one of these is said to work, I used the tea tree oil.

Co Q 10

Iv'e been told both in person and online that this vitamin is perfect for obtaining healthy gums. Simply take a Co Q 10 capsule(available at most drug stores) and wedge it in between your teeth and gum wall and let it dissolve. This remedy is easier than the tumeric packs, but its a little more expensive.

There are many sites for herbal dental care, one site I found extremely helpful is '1st Health Source' which had an article called 'Herbal Care of Teeth and Gums', here's the URL
